ปลายปี 2543 จากที่รัฐบาลได้มีนโยบายสนับสนุนให้ประชาชนแต่ละหมู่บ้านทำอาชีพเสริม เพื่อเพิ่มพูนรายได้ให้แก่ตนเองและครอบครัว ‘กลุ่มสตรีแม่บ้านดอกไม้ประดิษฐ์ บ้านสวนส้ม’ จังหวัดสมุทรสาคร จึงได้ถือกำเนิดขึ้นเช่นเดียวกับกลุ่มอาชีพในชุมชนต่างๆ
สุกัญญา คงวิจิตร ประธานกลุ่มเล่าที่มาของการจัดตั้งกลุ่มทำดอกไม้ประดิษฐ์จากดินญี่ปุ่นว่า เห็นตัวอย่างมาจากครูในชุมชน ซึ่งตนและทางกลุ่มเห็นว่าเป็นสิ่งแปลกใหม่ ไม่ซ้ำใคร จึงไปปรึกษาครูที่โรงเรียน จากนั้นจึงเข้าไปเรียนรู้ขั้นตอนการทำจากในกรุงเทพฯ แล้วกลับมาเริ่มทำที่หมู่บ้าน ซึ่งในตอนแรกทางกลุ่มมีสมาชิกอยู่เพียง 5 คน ตลาดแรกของทางกลุ่ม คือ ส่งไปขายให้กับทางร้านที่ไปเรียนมา หลังจากนั้นอีกไม่นานทางราชการก็เข้ามาให้ความช่วยเหลือ โดยพาไปออกร้านจัดแสดงสินค้าในตัวจังหวัด แต่ในระยะแรกนั้นสินค้ายังมีรูปแบบไม่หลากหลาย และไม่มีเอกลักษณ์ของตัวเอง ยอดจำหน่ายจึงไม่ดีเท่าที่ควร ทำให้เกิดความท้อแท้ขึ้นภายในกลุ่ม
“รูปแบบตอนนั้นยังแข็งๆ ไม่ค่อยเป็นธรรมชาติ ลูกค้าไม่ค่อยสนใจ ท้อเหมือนกัน แต่คิดกันว่าเลิกทำไม่ได้ เพราะถ้าเลิกทำ เงินที่รัฐให้มาก็สูญเปล่า ไมได้ทำให้เกิดประโยชน์อะไร”
จากบทเรียนคราวนั้นทางกลุ่มจึงได้พยายามปรับปรุงแนวคิด และหันมายึดหลักในการทำให้คล้ายคลึงกับธรรมชาติมากขึ้น ทั้งรูปแบบและสีสัน เพื่อให้เป็นที่ยอมรับของตลาด และพวกเขาก็ได้แก้ตัวอีกครั้งในงานออกร้านที่มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ ซึ่งครั้งนี้เองที่สร้างกำลังใจให้ลุกขึ้นสู้อีกครั้ง

นับจากวันนั้นเป็นต้นมาดอกไม้ประดิษฐ์จากดินญี่ปุ่นบ้านสวนส้ม ก็เริ่มได้รับการตอบรับที่ดีจากลูกค้าเพิ่มขึ้น และตอกย้ำคุณภาพอีกครั้ง ด้วยการออกร้านในงาน 1 ตำบล 1 ผลิตภัณฑ์ ณ เมืองทองธานี ทำให้สินค้าเริ่มเป็นที่รู้จักและได้รับความนิยมมากขึ้น จนได้รับยกย่องให้เป็น 1 ตำบล 1 ผลิตภัณฑ์ กลายเป็นสินค้าขึ้นชื่ออีกอย่างหนึ่งของจังหวัดสมุทรสาคร มีการนำมาลงเผยแพร่ในเว็บไซด์ www.ThaiTambon.com และสื่อต่างๆ อีกมากมาย
“เมื่อก่อนทำเป็นอาชีพเสริม เดี๋ยวนี้กลายเป็นงานประจำไปเลย จากตอนแรกที่มีสมาชิกเพียง 5 คน ตอนนี้เพิ่มเป็น 20-30 คนแล้ว”
ในการดำเนินธุรกิจ ทางกลุ่มมีการจัดสรรรายได้ให้สมาชิกโดยใช้วิธีหาร 2 คือ หักเข้าเป็นส่วนของกลุ่มครึ่งหนึ่ง อีกส่วนหนึ่งให้เป็นเงินรายได้ของสมาชิก
“เวลารับงานเข้ามาเราจะใช้วิธีเหมา คือ คนไหนทำดอกอะไรก็ทำให้ครบชุด ตั้งแต่ดอก ลำต้น ตกแต่งใส่ตอไม้จนเสร็จ ได้เท่าไหร่ก็จดเอาไว้ แต่ละคนจะทำได้ไม่เท่ากันขึ้นอยู่กับฝีมือและความชำนาญ คนไหนเก่งก็ทำได้เยอะ เคยได้มากสุดต่อคนราว 10,000 บาทต่อเดือน น้อยสุดก็ประมาณ 3,000 – 4,000 บาท
เมื่อถามถึงแนวทางในการขยายกิจการต่อไปในอนาคต ป้าสุกัญญาตอบว่า
“เราไม่ได้คาดหวังอะไรมากมาย เพราะงานตรงนี้ต้องใช้ความละเอียด ใช้เวลาในการทำมาก และแรงงานเรามีน้อย ถ้าสั่งเข้ามามากๆ ก็คงทำไม่ไหว อย่างลูกค้าบางรายสั่งงานเร่งเข้ามา เราก็จะไม่รับทำเลย เพราะทำไปก็ไม่สวยไมได้คุณภาพ ถ้าจะเปิดร้านเองคงไม่ไหว และอีกอย่างนี้เป็นธุรกิจของชุมชน ถ้าทำอย่างนั้นคงไม่ใช่ 1 ตำบล 1 ผลิตภัณฑ์แล้ว”
สิ่งที่ป้าสุกัญญาและสมาชิกทุกคนในกลุ่มหวังไว้ คือ การได้เห็นงานที่ทุ่มเททั้งแรงกายแรงใจได้กลายมาเป็นอาชีพเสริมของชุมชน สร้างรายได้ให้กับเพื่อนบ้านคนอื่นๆ และมีการสืบทอดต่อไป
“อยากเห็นเด็กรุ่นใหม่ๆ เข้ามาทำตรงนี้ เพราะพวกเรานี้อีกไม่นานก็คงทำไม่ไหวแล้ว หูตาก็ไม่ค่อยจะดี ตอนนี้จึงพยายามชักชวนพวกเด็กๆ ที่เขามีเวลาว่างให้มาฝึกทำกัน โดยเริ่มจากงานง่ายๆ ก่อน อย่างปั้นผลไม้เล็กๆ จัดใส่เรือ ใส่กระจาด โดยเราจะให้คำแนะนำเรื่องสีและการจัดเรียงให้สวยงาม ซึ่งถ้าเอาไปออกร้านและมีออเดอร์สั่งเข้ามา ก็จะเป็นรายได้ให้กับพวกเขาได้”
